I remembered this morning that it was many years ago when I was chastised for using "healthy" when I should have used "healthful". People living in that area living to be over 100 isn't the rarity it is elwewhere. Here in Germany, at least, when you order a shrimp cocktail, you get tiny shrimp--makes me think of cradle-robbing--in a sauce reminiscent of French dressing, but spicier. In the US you get full-grown shrimp with a sauce composed of ketchup and horseradish. I've made that for German friends, and they like it, but it isn't what you'll get in a restaurant. It was this morning when I woke up with visions of honey, olives, dates, nuts and figs. I had my first exposure to ripe figs right off the tree when I was stationed in Naples. My hotel on Capri had a huge fig tree right in the garden. Not even the fresh figs we can get in the markets here compare with right-off-the-tree figs.
